First events announced, more to follow shortly
What could possibly be better than the long, scorching summer we've just had? Apart from some rain* for your garden, the answer is of course our 2018/2019 programme!
We are pleased to confirm that the first few events of the season include:
- two social events (a Café Scientifique on Tue 16 Oct and a curry on Thu 25 Oct);
- a talk from the IOP on Thu 18 Oct;
- a tour around Stow Maries Aerodrome on Sat 20 Oct; and
- My Smarter Essex on Thu 1 Nov.

CSES support continues to have a positive impact
This article, reproduced with kind permission from Greensward Academy's STEM Roundup 2017-18 newsletter, showcases another excellent year of STEM achievement, facilitated by the CSES STEM Club Bursary and Schools' Engineering and Technology Competition.
Vegetable batteries
A team of year 7 students have been working on a project to investigate which vegetables make the best batteries, inspired by the concept of a potato clock. They have looked at how vegetable batteries work, as well as which metals make the best electrodes. They took their project to the 2018 CSES Schools' Engineering and Technology Competition to show their research.
CSES Schools' Competition entry selected for national final of Raspberry Pi design contest
Toby Cook and Wezi Phiri-Phinjikah of King Edward VI Grammar School tell the story of their H2Pi Watermeter.
The challenge for the PAPi Raspberry Pi competition 2018 was to invent a product to promote sustainability using a Raspberry Pi and our idea was a smart water meter.

Children from Trinity Road Primary school were invited to attend the 2018 CSES Schools' Engineering and Technology Competition at Anglia Ruskin University to present work they'd prepared as part of a school competition celebrating the Year of Engineering.

Personalised medicine: the hope and the hype, Wed 4 July 19:00, Anglia Ruskin University
We are pleased to announce the latest in our series of Café Scientifique events, to be held on Wednesday 4 July at 19:00 in the newly refurbished students' union bar (Café 92), Anglia Ruskin University.
In this session, Dr Gemma Chandratillake (Education and Training Lead, East of England Genomic Medicine Centre) will be talking about how genomic technologies will increasingly be used to guide healthcare, and also debunking some of the hype around direct-to-consumer DNA tests.
My Smarter Essex, Thu 1 Nov 2018 16:00-19:30, Anglia Ruskin University
We are pleased to announce that we are now taking bookings for our next My Smarter Essex event, which will be held on 1 November 2018 at 4:00-7:30pm, hosted by CSES and Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford Campus).
The latest in this series of successful events will ask "The Internet: is it Good For Us?" by examining how data, connectivity and artificial intelligence will influence our health, looking particularly at physical health, mental health and 'cyber health'. An exciting new, more interactive format is planned for this session.
We have limited spaces for attendees and places must be booked in advance, please contact us to book. Spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
IET Faraday Challenge, 30 January 2019, Anglia Ruskin University
We are pleased to announce that we have secured a Faraday Challenge Day from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on Wednesday 30 January 2019. The event will be held at Anglia Ruskin University.
We now need six schools to take part, each of which will submit a team of six year 8 students, and are offering schools the chance to register.
If you are interested, please contact us as soon as possible. Spaces will be offered on a first come, first served basis, and schools must be able to guarantee their attendance.
On 11 April 2018, a small group of CSES members were privileged to receive a guided tour of Lord Rayleigh's laboratory at Terling Place, which remains today largely as it was left in the 1940s.
Our thanks to Professor Edward Davies, University of Cambridge, for offering us this wonderful and rare opportunity.
For those who missed it, we will try to organise another tour in the future, with priority spaces offered to those on the waiting list from April.

We are pleased to announce that we have set the dates for our social meals and drinks for the remainder of 2018.
Our members, and their guests, are very welcome to join us at the following events:
- Chinese buffet (Thursday 14 June) at San Chinese
- Curry (Thursday 18 October) at Balti King
- Christmas meal/drinks (Thursday 13 December) at Wetherspoon's
These are excellent opportunities for all members to meet, network and share an enjoyable evening. We particularly encourage new members to come along and meet their counterparts.
We are also organising at least one Café Scientifique event for later in the year: please watch this space!
