Heartbleed security update

As you may be aware, a serious vulnerability codenamed "Heartbleed" was recently discovered in OpenSSL, the open-source software library used by nearly all internet-enabled devices to implement secure SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) connections.

The vulnerability allows an attacker to, in theory, read supposedly secure information from the server's memory; this includes data such as usernames, passwords and even the encryption keys used to secure communications with the server.

We would like to assure you that the version of OpenSSL currently used on this website is not vulnerable to this, and so you need take no action. Furthermore, any updates applied from now on will not include this bug as it has been fixed.

We are continuing to monitor the situation and will report if anything untoward is discovered. In the meantime, please see heartbleed.com for more information, or contact the Webmaster.

Our programme of lectures for the 2013-2014 season is now finalised. It looks to be a highly varied and exciting programme, and as ever we are hugely grateful to Anglia Ruskin University, the IET, IMechE and ICE for working with and supporting us.

Since large-scale industrialisation began in the eighteenth century, industrial development has had a huge influence on the way people have lived. Essex is often overlooked as an industrial county, but industry is a fascinating aspect of the county's past. This one-day conference will take a look at the industries which sprang up here, and the impact they had on local people's lives.

Website maintenance

The website is currently undergoing some essential maintenance.

Progress update: the main infrastructure work on the server is now complete, and the website should once again be fully operational. We are now accepting member registrations again.

Some less major work still needs to take place, and so the site may continue to be unavailable for short periods over the next few days. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause.
