My Smarter Essex: Your ReNEWable Future

A collaboration between CSES, Essex County Council (ECC), Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and the STEM Ambassador Hub for South East of England (HUBSEE), My Smarter Essex is back, this time hosted by Clacton Coastal Academy!

Featuring exciting talks, interactive polls and a showcase exhibition from local employers and other organisations, this event promises to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and to connect local communities and schools with education, training and employment opportunities. This also supports ECC's Levelling-Up agenda.

Background

CSES, in conjunction with ECC, ARU and HUBSEE have partnered with Clacton Coastal Academy to plan and organise a My Smarter Essex event that will be hosted at the School on 9 November 2022.

The Council, through its Employability and Skills Team, and CSES, work with these agencies to raise awareness of STEM learning, training and local employment opportunities. Their aims are to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, deliver solutions to the education and skills challenges which local industry faces and help to provide opportunities for young people to build long-term working careers.

The My Smarter Essex event is a CSES concept designed to focus on a topical STEM theme, delivered to meet these targets and also support the ECC Levelling-Up Agenda.

The My Smarter Essex format generally comprises:

• A Presentation session (e.g. 2 or 3 short presentations) each followed by a short polling Q&A, via smart phone or tablet, to explore the theme, raise awareness of the facts and issues, the benefits and opportunities and to collect and measure the impact, understanding and feedback from the session and event. This feedback is anonymous and helps inform, shape and improve our future MSE Roadshows, our on-going programme of Events and helps us and our partner agencies to plan, design and implement the best possible programme of future talks, events and educational offerings.
• A STEMFAIR exhibition and marketplace for topical and local Industries, STE(A)M training and apprenticeship providers and employment and career opportunities. The MSE events also aim to connect local communities to schools, each other and to raise awareness of all local education, training and employment and career opportunities.
• Opportunities for students to engage in practical experimental work, guided by experienced STEM activity providers, which will focus on the theme of the event through use of appropriate STEM learning tools and aids.

Clacton Coastal Academy

Clacton Coastal Academy is a vibrant and forward-looking school with energetic and supportive staff keen to plan and host a My Smarter Essex event.

The event is titled "Step into STEM: Your ReNEWable Future" and will include a wide range of presenters and local training providers, activity sessions and a STEMFAIR.

The target student group is Year 10 (KS4, 14-15 years of age). There are circa 240 students in this year group!

A full day programme has been planned in conjunction with the School Team, ECC and HUBSEE and CSES. Snack food will be offered during the break and parents will be invited to attend the closing session with their family members and friends.
