Fusion has long promised limitless safe power and some claim it is the silver bullet for our energy challenges. Yet, decades after it was first conceived, we still seem far from commercialisation. In this talk we will look at the physical and engineering challenges, what we’ve achieved so far and what needs to be done if we are to realise the potential of this technology.

Mike Bluck is Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College, coordinating nuclear research, teaching and outreach. He has acted as an advisor to Government, Parliament, and industry across the whole spectrum of nuclear related issues. He is also the Director of the Rolls-Royce Nuclear University Technology Centre (UTC) supporting research for both the nuclear submarine and new Small-Modular Reactor (SMR) programmes. He has specific expertise in nuclear reactor design through the application of advanced computational methods to both nuclear fission and nuclear fusion engineering.

Refreshments will be available from 30 minutes before the advertised start time.
