Spacecraft Propulsion

A FREE CSES talk for the public by Dr Steven Cutts

Spacecraft Propulsion

In this talk, Steven will discuss how rocket technology has evolved (or not evolved) over time and what futuristic technologies could propel us to distant planets in the coming years.

For many years the underlying obstacle to space exploration was the immense cost of launching rockets into outer space. Many engineers have attempted to address this challenge beginning with the space shuttle and culminating in the space x Falco nine rocket that routinely rescues its first stage. Space X is now struggling to develop its starship fully reusable launch vehicle and may have to abandon at least part of this ambition.

What are the obstacles to building a fully reusable rocket? Why has it taken so long and how did the iconic space shuttle actually cost more to operate than a disposable rocket?

Steven Cutts studied physics at Imperial College and medicine at St Thomas's Hospital in London. He has a lifetime interest in the exploration of outer space and his sci-fi novel, The Village On Mars, was published five years ago. He has previously written for The Independent, Space Flight Magazine, Astragia Magazine, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times.

Refreshments will be available from 30 minutes before the advertised start time.
