What do jet engines, foldable touchscreen phones, nuclear power plants, meteorites and drink cans have in common?  The answer - materials science.

Material science and engineering is an incredibly broad and fascinating area of study that is essential in most areas of modern life!  This inter-disciplinary science looks at how the structure of atoms on a micro scale affect the propertes of a materialas a whole(after all coal and diamonds are made of the same atoms!).  But how do we know what atoms and atomic structures are present in a given material?

In this talk Dr Alex Foden takes us on a tour of analysis techniques used in modern day materials science, what they can be used to show and how they can work in tandem to help us understand the worl around us.
