This lecture covers the use of the latest remote sensing technologies to convert standard wind instruments into digital reversible hybrid versions.

Unlike many other instruments, the saxophone, clarinet and flute cannot be easily silenced with a mute for quiet practice.  But it’s possible to quieten them by changing the way they respond to the player’s breath, and by using modern methods to detect the positions of his/her fingers, the user can hear a quiet digitally-synthesised version of their playing. We look at the physics underlying these methods, the challenges involved in producing a viable device based on them, along with practical demonstrations of the resulting products.

Refreshments will be available from 30 minutes before the advertised start time.
