The government has set a target for all new vehicles under 3.5T to be zero emissions from 2030, and Cop26 has created an even stronger focus on the need for transport solutions with zero tailpipe emissions. While sales of plug-in passenger cars have accelerated strongly, with over 10% market share in 2021, vans have so far lagged well behind, with zero-emission variants accounting for only 1-2% of sales.

Following the success of the plug-in hybrid Transit launched in 2019, Ford is now aiming to increase the popularity of plug-in vans with a fully electric version of the Transit, aiming to meet demanding needs of commercial users.

In this hybrid lecture, Andrew Mottram, Chief Programme Engineer at Ford, will present insights into the technology and development processes required to develop and launch an all-electric version of Britain's best-selling commercial vehicle, the Ford Transit, "Backbone of Britain". Attendees will learn about the design and engineering principles of the all new Ford e-transit van and how it meets its sustainability targets without compromising on toughness, capability, or versatility.
