High voltage insulated power cables are a vital component of modern electrical infrastructure, used when overhead lines are either impractical, such as marine and urban environments, or visually undesirable. This talk aims to discuss the history of insulated cable systems, beginning in 1890 all the way to modern offshore wind farm circuits transmitting a significant proportion of UK power. Looking forwards we discuss some of the current challenges facing cable systems, much of which require a range of expertise from ecologists to geophysicists.
George Callender is a lecturer in the Electrical Power Engineering group at the University of Southampton, his undergraduate degree was in Mathematics and Physics. His primary research area is on simulating high voltage cables.
