What does it really mean for a system to be one-dimensional? This presentation explores that question through the lens of quantum electronics; a rich field with many applications in future computing and fundamental science. We develop a picture of the physical phenomena common to one-dimensional quantum systems, and show how nano scale wires can become multi-mode waveguides for electrons in the right conditions. We will also see some recent developments in the way these devices can be used beyond computing, in the context of electron transport in DNA.
Refreshments will be available from 30 minutes before the advertised start time.
