Felsted Students and others at the Billericay Soap Box Derby

Felsted Pupils Shine at Billericay Soapbox Derby 2024

In a wonderful display of creativity and collaboration, Felsted School pupils, parents, and staff teamed up with REMAP engineers at the Billericay Soapbox Derby. The annual extravaganza drew in thousands of spectators eager to witness the spectacle of soapbox chariots hurtling down a perilous route towards the finishing line. This year, Felsted pupils have partnered with REMAP, working collaboratively to create a computerised memory game aimed at assisting people with dementia. Weekly sessions with REMAP engineers have provided Felsted students with invaluable opportunities to hone their scientific, engineering and design skills, all while contributing to a meaningful cause.

This ongoing work between REMAP and Felsted led the partnership to go full throttle at the Soapbox race, with REMAP calling on the Felsted Team to give them a flying start.

Before the REMAP soapbox car was launched, the crowd was treated to a captivating performance by Felsted pupils Hugo, Dougie, Henry, and Jenson. Their spirited sketch shone a spotlight on REMAP's remarkable work, spanning over six decades of transformative engineering endeavours. REMAP, a charity with the motto "Resourceful Engineers Make Anything Possible", is dedicated to aiding individuals living with disabilities across Essex by designing and inventing devices tailored to their needs.

The highlight of the day's events was undoubtedly the record-breaking run of REMAP’s soapbox, shaving an impressive eight seconds off their previous best time. As the pit crew giving the soapbox it’s all-important push-start over the line, Felsted staff members, Mr Golding Fuller, Mr Bury, and Miss Westwood's unwavering dedication and physical prowess were instrumental in achieving this remarkable feat.

Christina Bury, Assistant Head - Academic at Felsted School, who has been instrumental in building the relationship between the school and REMAP, remarked, "Our pupils demonstrated boundless enthusiasm and energy, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. We extend our gratitude to our supportive parents who cheered the team on."

Peter Livingstone, Chairman of Essex Central REMAP, commented, "Thank you to Felsted School for their invaluable help and enthusiasm at the Billericay Soapbox Derby. The sketches by Felsted students were a highlight in celebrating REMAP's 60 years and Team Felsted's efforts as soapbox pushers ensured the best REMAP FLYER times. It was a great day and a super opportunity to raise awareness of REMAP and the dedicated work involved to support people with disabilities across Essex at no cost. Thank you, everyone."
