The history of the supply of water to the residents of Chelmsford is interesting and at times surprising.
Join us on the winding journey as we drop into 99-year lease problems, wooden pipes, floods and droughts.
We will visit Greek mythology and learn of Niads and scantily-clad lost water nymphs. We will hear of the philanthropy of Robert Greenwood Esq, the Fitzwaters, Sir William Mildmay's charity and the Chelmsford Bishops. The toil of the mediaeval Friars, the endeavours of Dr John Clough Thresh and the foresight of the town elders hundreds of years ago through the ages and more recently by the 1923 Chelmsford Corporation.
From the Romans to the present day, this promises to be a cascade of fast-flowing information, an illustrated talk that leaves no stone unturned and no story unquenched.
Anthony is the CSES Treasurer, an Essex County Councillor and part-time researcher. We look forward to seeing you there.
This talk is part of Chelmsford Festival 2021.
