Speaker: Dr Rhys Lewis (Head of Quantum Metrology Institute, National Physical Laboratory)
The accurate measurement of time has been a scientific and engineering challenge for centuries. Improvements in the ability to measure time have also been an engine for technological advancements from navigation at sea, through a synchronised railway network to modern-day GPS. The talk will review some of the history of time measurements but concentrate on the state-of-the-art methods being implemented at NPL and the prospects for new technologies based on these techniques.
Refreshments will be available before the talk from 18:30.
