Engineering Advanced Prosthetics

Artificial arms and legs are some of the oldest medical devices developed by mankind. In recent years our image of artificial limbs has changed from the fearsome hook and peg-leg of the seafarers of old to the modern prosthetic supermen of television and film. So while the reality lags behind the movies, in recent years we have been able to incorporate more and more of the technology that most of us take for granted. It is an engineering challenge to make limbs that are practical and useful to the wearers; it must be compact, useful and cheap enough to be widely used. This is not always easy. This talk will describe the evolution of the modern artificial limbs and demonstrate some of the technology that goes into making a bionic man.
